According to the Urban Planning Department, in order to further enhance Guangzhou's disaster prevention function and to expand urban security space, an emergency shelter is to be built in Dongfeng Park by the Guangzhou Earthquake Office and the Yuexiu District Earthquake Office. In the event of natural disasters and public emergencies, citizens can go into the shelter for protection. At present, the project is in the planning stage with construction expected to end within one year.
According to the plan, there will be a command center at Dongfeng to include 2 supply centers, 10 water supply stations, a power supply station, a medical center and 8 washrooms. Additionally, an apron will be built, whose function is primarily for distribution of emergency supplies.
In addition to the Dongfeng Park, in 2006 an emergency shelter was established in the Xiaogang Park of Haizhu District with another shelter scheduled to be built at Chen Jia Ci (Chen Ancestral Temple). The two new projects are currently in planning and are expected to be completed this year.
The Guangzhou Earthquake Office said that, in the future, a unified management plan would be implemented to co-ordinate all emergency shelters. By the year 2010 at least one emergency shelter will be established in each of Guangzhou's 10 Districts and 2 counties.
